Facts About Traumatic Brain Injuries

Based in Astoria, New York, John Constantinides serves as the manager of eBridgeBuilder, a market research company focused on the real estate and financial services industries. In his personal life, after his wife suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI), John Constantinides created the Demetra Brain Recovery Foundation in 2010 to help those dealing with similar conditions.

According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2010, every year at least 1.7 million people experience TBIs. The study also found that almost one-third of all injury-related deaths occur due in part to TBIs. In addition, the CDC reported that the leading causes of TBIs are falls, followed by motor vehicle accidents, events where the individual is struck or collides with a moving object, and assaults. Of these individuals, the CDC found that children ages 0 through 4 and adults age 65 or older have the highest risk of suffering a TBI.
